Tell us about yourself, the Department of Early Childhood Education (ADECE), and your position.

I am a Communication Specialist with ADECE. In this role, I support the Director of Communications and Government Relations. We focus on ensuring clear, consistent, and effective communication about the programs, policies, and initiatives housed in ADECE that serve children from birth to age eight.

What has surprised you the most about working at ADECE?

I have been amazed at the amount and range of offerings available through ADECE. From our nationally recognized First Class Pre-K to the First Teacher Home Visiting program, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Infant and Early Childhood consultations, and Mental Health consultations and so much more, there are many resources to help families with young children.

What do you like most about working for ADECE?

The staff is outstanding! Each is passionate about making sure the young children of Alabama have every opportunity to succeed. The knowledge and experience of our leadership, directors, and office/support staff is incredible. Their passion for our youngest learners is contagious. It is a joy to promote the good works of our department and makes my job rewarding.

What advice do you have for prospective candidates interested in working for ADECE?

Do it! Get on the register by applying at www.personnel.alabama.gov. From the unbeatable benefits, the room for growth, and the numerous opportunities, it is a fantastic place to work and is very satisfying by helping others.

What are three words to describe ADECE?

Can I have four? Essential, Inspiring, Hard-working, Passionate.

What do you think people that don’t work for your department should know about what you all do?

Research shows that ninety percent of a child’s brain develops in the first five years. We focus on providing young children across Alabama high-quality care and education through a variety of services and programs. Giving children the best foundation during these formative years is paramount to the future of Alabama.

What is your favorite quote?

We stand in the shade of trees we did not plant.

If you could interview one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

I would love to interview my mother. The older I get the more things I wish I had asked her.

Thank you Kathryn for taking the time to tell us about yourself and the good work of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education!
