The State of Alabama is committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of our military and their families. Under state law, certain applicants may receive employment preference. This policy explains who qualifies for veterans’ preference, what documents are required, and how to apply within the State Merit System.
Military/Veterans’ Preference Policy
Step 1:
Categories for Preference and Documentation Requirements
- Veteran (5 points): Upload your DD‑214 showing your dates of active‑duty service (not for training) and type of discharge.
- Spouse of a veteran (5 points): Upload your marriage certificate and your spouse’s DD‑214.
- Spouse of an active‑duty service member (5 points): Upload your marriage certificate and a copy of the service member’s PCS (Permanent Change of Station) orders.
- Veteran with a service-connected disability, whether permanent or non-permanent (10 points): Upload your DD‑214 and a VA disability letter. If the disability is not permanent, the letter must be dated within the past year; otherwise, you will receive 5 points with the DD-214.
- Spouse of a veteran with a service-connected disability (10 points): Upload the DD‑214, your marriage certificate, and a VA disability letter. If the disability is not permanent, the letter must be dated within the past year. Eligibility is based on the veteran’s inability to qualify due to their disability.
- Surviving spouse of a service member or veteran who is deceased (10 points): If the service member died in the line of duty, upload a DD-1300 (Report of Casualty) and your marriage certificate. If the deceased individual is a veteran, upload a DD-214, your marriage certificate, and the veteran’s death certificate. Note: Surviving spouses who have remarried are not eligible for preference.
Step 2:
How to Apply for Preference
To apply for preference, eligible applicants must indicate their preference status when completing the online employment application. All required documentation must be uploaded through the applicant’s online account before preference can be applied.
