National Agriculture Day

By SPD Communications

Every year, National Ag Day serves as a reminder of the vital role agriculture plays in our daily lives. In Alabama, agriculture isn’t just an industry, it’s a way of life! From the fields of row crops to the cattle farms and poultry houses, our state’s farmers work tirelessly to feed and clothe the nation.

Agriculture and forestry are the backbone of Alabama’s economy, generating $77.3 billion annually and providing 273,271 jobs, making up 10 percent of Alabama’s workforce. With over 43,000 farms covering more than eight million acres, our farmers produce a diverse array of crops and livestock, including soybeans, catfish, peanuts, poultry, and timber. It’s no wonder Alabama ranks among the top agricultural states in the country. Additionally, agricultural and forestry industries generate five jobs per $1 million in direct sales.

The top economic contributors are timber production & processing at $30.6 billion and poultry & egg production & processing at $19 billion. For every one dollar of income in the agricultural and forestry industries, an additional $0.66 of income is generated in other industries within the local economy.

National Agriculture Day is not just about recognizing the contributions of farmers but also about educating the public on the importance of sustainable and responsible farming. Advances in agricultural technology have helped Alabama’s farmers become more efficient, ensuring that we can continue to feed a growing population, while preserving our natural resources. Take a moment to appreciate the hard work of our local farmers. Whether you stop by a farmers’ market, purchase Alabama-grown products or simply thank a farmer, every small act of gratitude counts.

Happy National Ag Day!
